Listening at the Door - is it now the official way to play?

While playing Munchkin at a convention with some MiBs, I was told that the Listening at the Door rule is the official way to play. I thought it was only official for the tournament rules, but I was told that they are pretty sure that it is a relatively new rule change that is official across the board. Reading the most recent Munchking rules (version 1.6), there is no mention of Listening at the Door. I was under the impression it is an optional rule (of course all rules are optional when you have house rules, but you know what I mean). Can someone clear this up?
