My low metal worldline building continues and I've moved into Western Civilization on the Local Year Worldline of 883 AD.
I notice that the Viking Raids and the mass invasion in the 800's seemed to have quite a bit to do with the destruction of the old kingdoms, and the Rise of Wessex and the eventual Viking defeat in 896. I notice alot of Wessex's prominence, Alfred's lather fortifications, etc, all of this prosperity seemed to stem directly or indirectly from devising ways to protect themselves from Viking raids, or just flat out Viking armies. Is this a reasonable assumption and if so does this mean if the viking raids were put off, or at the least less severe then in our worldline, that The rise of Wessex and the eventual English Unification may not have come to pass? Or were their other factors that may have driven it, even without Viking interference, raids, and wars? Also, out of curiosity? Who's the Great Power here between Scandinavia and The british Isles? In our history I mean? Is it the british Isles? Is it Scandinavia? are they both? Or is neither?
