Default Wanna Be Vampire and class changing

My friends and I had a small dispute about the rules. My friend needed help with a wanna be vampire and was not a cleric so he was trying to fight and was going to ask for help. He then told one of the players not in combat to switch classes, then join him so as to just have the vampire run away. Is this legal? Do the rules of changing classes "in combat" apply to everyone, fighting or otherwise?

Also, in the next game, my friend was level 9 and drew the wanna be vampire and was a cleric. We argued it simply ran away but he disagreed and said he had to utter the phrase "booga booga" as printed on the card. Is the fleeing optional in this case? Can he fight it if he so chooses?

This is my understanding of the rules in the above scenario(s).

You can only switch races and/or classes on your turn. Being involved in a combat (helping someone) does not make it your turn, so your friend could not ask someone to become a cleric and help him.

Wannabe Vampire sais

Moderator edit: Please don't quote card text.

Since the card sais instead of fighting, I would assume that you can choose to fight it.

I'm going with Ozzmal. You can lose a Class/Race at any time but become a new one only during your own turn.

Also, The Wannabe Vampire states: "Cleric can chase [...] away", so I say it's clearly optional and the fighter's choice.

Ozzmal and Ian are correct: You can not play a new Race or Class when it's not your turn, unless you just received the card. Since that doesn't seem like the scenario described, and an unlikely thing to happen, anyway, the other player can't join the combat and become a Cleric. The Wannabe Vampire also doesn't immediately flee from Cleric's. The Cleric must actively want the Wannabe Vampire to leave the combat.
