A friend suggested we play with more than one die to add length and complexity to the game. We tried it and liked it.
So here are our variant rules. Use 3 dice and 9 sanity per person. Resolution order is determined by what best benefits Cthulhu. Dice can't be split up for multiple targets (it didn't break the game, but we prefer not to) Play proceeds exactly like the regular game. However, when the dice results are handled, the sequence of resolution is done to Cthulhus favor. For example, you have 2 sanity left and I have none. I attack you and roll Tentacle, Yellow Sign, Elder Sign. The Elder Sign goes last. If it went before the Tentacle, I'd get two Sanity and Cthulhu gets one. (The order of the tentacle and yellow sign in this case are purely semantic. But if I had sanity to begin with, the yellow sign would go before the tentacle). We've played with up to 5/15 and it worked pretty well, but we've centered on 3/9 as ideal. |

Over the holidays, we were playing in groups of six or more and we were doing much the same thing and we too settled on three dice.
Also, we had gone to the local craft store and bought different colored glass beads for each person. That way we could track a person's sanity as it made its way around the table. Also, it gave the "victim" a choice when hit with a yellow sign or tentacle as to which sanity you parted with. It felt not so sanity draining to part with a sanity marker that you had stolen from someone else anyway. It also made for good vendettas when somebody looked around and noticed that two or three of their markers were sitting happily in some one else's pile. We also used the multiple colors of sanity markers with the single dice version of the game. With a full table and players ranging from age 6 to 50, there was a lot of howling and laughter around the table. It was super fun. |
