Default Listen at the Door

Ok, so when you draw a card in phase "0" it goes into you hand, then you kick open the door, but when you kick open the door, can it be the card you just drew, or does it have to be a new one?

Thanks!

It has to be a new one. The "Listen at the Door" phase is basically just a free Door card at the start of your turn, if you want one. Your turn proceeds to the "Kick Down the Door" phase like normal.

Consequently, I think this is also why "Loot the Room" phase becomes a Treasure card in the fast play rules. ;)

Actually, if you use the Listen ATD rule, you don't get the option -- you HAVE to draw that first Door card. (And yes, that's why Looting becomes a Treasure using that rule -- because after "We don't see enough monnnnnnsters," the second-loudest complaint about Munchkin was "I can never get any Treeeeaaaaasure." Maybe with less whining. ;-) )

Ok, thanks Andrew. I really like the sound of that rule. Makes more sense to me to do it that way.

Oh, you HAVE to? I see. I misread the rule and I thought the phase was actually optional. That actually makes sense if it's not. My mistake.

And yeah, I love these Faster Play Rules. The old ones were flawed, I felt.

Yeah, these faster play rules are great. I had always pressured the gamers I was with to just start taking treasures while looting when the game was dragging, but I hadn't thought of a solution to put doors in the hand as well.

We played with the "Faster Play rules" previously just because of the opening hand of 4 & 4. I think I have only played 2 Munchkin games in my whole life that were 2 & 2. No one ever bothered with the "discard a GUAL" rule, either. I don't even think they were aware of it! The rules pretty much didn't make the game go any faster at all, haha.

Definitely love the changes in the new version. 4 & 4 default hand and Faster Play rules that actually make the game faster. I hope to actually get a group of my friends together someday to play with all my new full color cards and new rules.

That was the idea!

We toyed with a couple of other fixes, but decided they made life harder, not easier.

Oh I can tell it was the idea! When I first saw the new rulebook I grinned ear to ear.

I have a related question - although it may just be a restatement of the original question with slightly different specifics. I was playing with friends using faster play rules.

One friend felt that if a monster is drawn during the listen phase, that the player could then fight the monster (basically, Look for Trouble) because the faster play rules state that you may choose to play the drawn card.

I argued that the card drawn while listening should be treated as if it were drawn while looting the room - race, class, curse or race/class modifier cards (and perhaps other types of cards that I can't think of at the moment) may be played, but not monsters.

Which is the correct interpretation?

We ended up ditching the faster play rules because this could not be resolved satisfactorily.
