Snarkham Asyulum with Cult Membership Card

Hello folks,
I recently picked up Munchkin Cthulhu for the first time, and was showing off the new rules to some experienced players.
Apparently it their group a long standing debate, that still rages on, about the "cult membership card" and how it interacts with "Curse! Dragged off to Snarkham Asylum."

Specifically, if you can pretend to be a cultists with the membership card, and because the membership card is not actually a cultist class card keep it, then draw a replacement class from the discard replacing your current class or simply getting a class if you had none.
Or
You use the cult member ship card, lose it and, get a new class.
