As an allternative, 3rd Edition's GURPS Mecha had transforming ruleds. Applyhing those rules to Magic Items undoubtedly ain't Kosher and probably will bend the brain a bit, but the presumption for the campaign that allows this is that the spirits that bind magic to items are flexible with sufficient bribes.

Specifically the goal is for a Mauser C96 to be able to morph into a Thompson SMG
