Now I finally get it

I've had GURPS character assistant for at least 2 years and for years I've really really wanted to like it. And in fact have posted several times here to try to figure out what made me not like it.

I would sit down with the books come up with a character concept and figure out what I wanted to do with my attributes figure out which advantages I wanted and get a general idea of which modifiers I needed then I would start trying to stat it. This is when the problem started. The more I tried to see that process as smooth and clean the more confused I got. I could sit down and fight with the program to but I couldn't imagine sitting down with a newbie and not looking like I didn't know what I was talking about it.

Then I started playing with the HERO game designer. I created a character really quickly and easily. This made me start about the Character Assistant again and looked at it with fresh eyes.

I discovered categories. The ability to sort by categories and get rid of all the extra categories when looking for something made all the difference. The last few days I've been using the Assistant and I'm doing much better using it.

I would still really love a easy convenient way to create a world template. Create special advantages and then just exclude everything else. Including excluding advantages and modifiers that are part of an advantage.

For instance:
Elves in my world have night vision so I could create an Elf package but remove Nightvision from the advantage choice that PC's see.
