Default hireling & mook questions

Munchkin 4 says "Other Hirelings ... can specifically carry and use an Item themselves ...". The Thief Hireling, in particular, says it can "carry and use any one item ...".

So, what exactly can it carry? A helmet, sure. But does that limit MY ability to wear another helmet?

Can the thief carry a 2-handed item?

The thief hireling also grants me an additional hand, so would this up my hand total to 5?

Monster Modifiers (the +5/+10 cards) count as permanent +1/+2 when played on hirelings. However, the Mooks from Munchkin Fu say they can only have 1 such card played on them, and they don't do anything else, so does a monster enhancer have the full effect on a mook?

Thanks!

A Mook can have one monster enhancer played on it for full effect. As of the most recent rule revisions, no other Hireling-type cards may be enhanced at all, even for 1/5 the bonus (it was too much of a pain to remember).

Any one item, as the text you quoted says. (Actually, I believe the full text specifies "legal for a Thief" - so no Bard-only or the like.) Since the hireling's carrying and using it, that item doesn't count against your character's limits...but if the hireling gets killed, its item also goes away.

Of course; "any one item."

No. You have three hands, none of which are affected by whatever the Thief Hireling is carrying.

More to the point, the ones that only specify that they can carry any "one item" could even carry something like the Three-handed sword.

I was not a fan. I wish I would have focused more on it back in playtest and spoken out against it. It turned out to make too much trouble, especially when blending.

I don't think it was any trouble. I actually liked having Ancient Hirelings with Secret Underground Bases, etc. I just put them at the "top" of the stack. If I could keep track of them while drinking, it couldn't be too hard :)

Actually, did they do away with the 1/5 for steeds, too?

It gets complicated when you look at the Mook. It gets complicated when you have people trying to figure out what the +3s from Cthulhu do. . .

Of course.

It figures they'd do away with the steed bonus too. Well, not in MY house!! :)

We only just got Fu, so there was no confusion over the Mooks until Christmas. Even so, it's not THAT confusing. Keeping track of stuff like that, the confusion, seeing what you can get away with ... I think that's a HUGE part of the fun of Munchkin!

Anyway, for house rules, I'll say that the old 1/5 bonus applies to hirelings and steeds, and the Mooks get a special option of having only ONE monster-enhance cards for the full bonus.

Still, it's good to know the real rules so I know what I'm breaking!
