Hireling Questions

The Hireling card has changed a lot with the new version. Can a hireling be thieved? Is it a small item that you can lose to a curse? It seems to me that the only way you could lose it is if someone plays the “Kill the Hireling” card or if you decide to discard the card for automatic escape. Also, can you change items that the Hireling has equipped?
