I'm a little confused as to exactly how Hirelings work. I know that you can have 1 in play at any given time normally (excepting use of Cheat cards or other treasure cards), but I had some general questions aside from this:
1) If I am using a classed hireling (i.e. a Bard Hireling), it can carry and use any item that is legal for a Bard to use. Does this include generic items? (Assuming it does since non-specific items are legal for a Bard to use). 2) Is there any restriction on what a hireling can use due to hands, big, etc.? For example, a Bard can use the Big Fat Lyre which is a 2-handed item that is also big. Can the Bard Hireling have this be the item that he uses for me? Or does the fact that it requires hands or the fact that it is big somehow factor into what I am also carrying? 3) If the Hireline does not otherwise state that it can carry/use an item (like the Torchbearer Hireling), is the assumption that it cannot? What about the generic Hireling from the original set? |

With respect to Items, Hirelings do what the cards on them say. That means if a Hireling does not say it can carry or use an Item, it can't. Hireling with Race or Class say that any Item that Race or Class can use is legal. If you are an Elf, and you can use the Item, then the Elf Hireling can too. For the sake of extreme clarity, that means that the Elf Hireling can use an Item that says "Usable by Elf only" or a "generic" Item, but not Items that say, "Usable by [not Elf] only" or "Not usable by Elf."
If the Hireling in question says it carries and uses the Item, then it doesn't matter what you are using. If your hands are full, you can still give your Bard Hireling the Slay Bells because it is using the Item for you. If the Hireling only enhances your abilities, then it still might give you all you need to use the Item. And, what about the original Hireling? It says on it what it can do, and since there are now two versions, I can't even answer your question until I know to which one you are referring. :-) |
