What are the tokens for?

Sorry for this noob question, but we just got the game yesterday and played a full round without ever touching the tokens. When do they come into play? The only mention of them in the rules is at the beginning where it says each player should have 10 tokens (we used poker chips). We ended up using them to keep track of our levels.
