I recently put the finishing touches on 9 road sections for Hot Wheels scale Car Wars, and I thought I'd share. I always like to see and hear what the community is up to, and figured most of you would too.
Anyways some photos (external since I can't attach here it seems): Road Section Pictures! How I did it, well... Basically I took 1/8" thick hardboard and overlayed grid paper separated into inch wide squares. Then I cut along the dotted line, more or less, to get the desired shapes I wanted. After that it was two grades of sandpaper along the edges and bottom. Next I used some textured spray paint (highly recommended!) to give the sections a rougher feel like real asphalt. The next spray coat was flat black. Simple enough. Then I painted on the yellow lines. For this I used a narrow, straight sponge dipped in yellow paint. I went for a rougher, worn look, so as long as the lines were generally in a row I didn't mind if they weren't entirely rectangular and squared at the edges. I used the same sponge for some slight drybrushing of gray, to raise some of the texture and give the surface a more varied look. The flash from my camera really shows this off, but in person it's not too bad. Finally I sprayed a clear protective coating to seal in the paint and prevent chipping as Hot Wheels floor it over the surface. |
