Annihilation

I'm a wizard who is running away. My roll fails, but I pause to consider bumping up my die roll. Instead, I choose to play annihilation on the Monster I'm running away from. Is this a legal play?

From my perspective, the moment I play Annihilation, the monster I'm running away from no longer exists as the card is immediately removed from the game.

If the play is legal, can it be done by classes who don't have any roll enhancers?
