So, I've discovered some of the things I love most about In Nomine (and Old World of Darkness), are the vignettes. They do more than teach the game and demonstrate points; they give you little peeks into what other GM's might have done. Was Nicole purely a work of fiction, I wonder, or did she have a player?
Another thing that vignettes do is introduce metaplot. I'll never forget the way I felt when I first read White Wolf's Time of Thin Blood and stared in wonder as the writer described an entire country being plunged into chaos and madness. Ravnos rising from torpor and battling three of the most powerful Kuei Jin on Earth over the ocean shoreline, blackening the sky just long enough for the Technocracy to launch project Ragnarok. Much like OWoD, In Nomine has the potential for a great deal of spine-tingling drama. I like to think of over-arching metaplots as "Those things that the developers did when they playtested the game." This may be true, or this may be wildly inaccurate; I've never been a developer. To that end, though, there are some serious questions that I have about the In Nomine campaign setting. 1. Does Nikki ever kill Marcus? 2. What happened to that painting? 3. In the IPG opening vignette, Solitaire, was it her phone number in the cards? 4. What are the seven circumstances that will predate the sounding of Gabriel's horn? 5. What are the higher heavens like? 6. What will be the ultimate fate of the Grigori? 7. Will Gabriel ever reclaim her status as God's messenger? 8. Who will take up arms and become the patron saint of Judaism? 9. What was the deal with Jesus? 10. Will we ever see from the likes of Uriel, Raphael or Metatron again? 11. What is Eli up to? 12. How will Armageddon play out? The list goes on and on and on, and I vaguely remember reading that the In Nomine developers were famous for the "answer it yourself" solution -- not that I blame them. Still, I'm certain that while some of my questions will be answered in due time and some of them were never answered directly, some of them have already been answered. I just don't know what books to buy. While I know that it's unlikely that anyone will hand me these answers directly, I will ask some more reasonable questions: 1. What books can I look to for the answers to my previous question (Especially #4)? 2. What books detail the saga of Nikki, and in what order should they be read?
