Default Ablative, Flexible personal force fields for action games

Greetings, all!

I'm exploring possibilities for TL9ish action-packed games, and this is an idea I'm wondering about:

Personal shield belts that provide Flexible Ablative Force Field DR, but transfer about 0.1 of the damage to HP. This seems like a good way to prolong combats and prevent all-or-nothing combats. Ideally, such shields should only protect against ranged attacks only, giving place to mêlée weapons. However, that would make tanglers and boomsticks the kings of all combats. I'm not sure can this be prevented.

Anyway, does anyone have opinions and/or suggestions regarding such equipment?
