Default Question about Giant Skunk

We were playing Munchkin last night, and a fellow player cursed me, so I wanted to get back at him...and later in the game...I found my chance.

He busted down a door card and it was a Giant Skunk. He could kill the monster, so I put down a wandering monster card and put down a level 9 monster.

"HA HAH! Fool! You'll lose this combat! No on can help you."

And then another player said, "I'll help you fight that wandering monster."

I then replied, "You can't help him...he's facing off against the giant skunk and the wandering monster...you won't...you can't get within 20 feet of him while he is in combat."

He then said: "You need to run away from the monsters separately...so I can help him defeat the wandering monster...and HE can fight the skunk on his own."

"No no no. The combat is the combined monsters together. You are prevented from joining in the combat of both monsters together...because one monster says: you cannot get within 20 feet of player. If you cannot get 20 feet...you can't help him in the combat."

"I can help. As the wandering monster comes around the corner...I can grab him before he joins the combat...thus killing it...so he doesn't join the combat."

And then we argued for about 10 more minutes...because it's munchkin...and because it was HIS game...he had the final say and allowed himself to kill the wandering monster...and the player I wanted to backstab (for backstabing me earlier) killed the giant skunk on his own.

I say that NO PLAYER could have helped in the combat because of the Giant Skunk.

He says he could help by killing the wandering monster separately before the monster joined the combat.

Who is right?

As I understand it, it doesn't even matter if the skunk was the original monster or the wandering monster. All text applies for the combat as a whole, meaning no one helps -- period. You can never cherry pick which monsters in a combat you want to get help with. It's an all-or-nothing situation.

The monsters fight together -- the second player could not have joined the combat while the Giant Skunk was in the fight.

And, quite seriously, ask him to point in the rules where it says he can make that kind of stuff up. Grab and kill the Wandering Monster before it joins the combat? Seriously? No. The Wandering Monster joins instantly. He can't trip it up and kill it before it joins because the rules don't tell you that's even an option. I'm sorry, but I'm just aghast: That, quite honestly, has to be the dumbest thing I've heard in September, and I've heard a couple of doozies already this month AND Congress is in session.

So, to be absolutely clear: Owning the game does not allow you to make junk up on the spot. If you have a dispute, it's fine for the owner to make a decision, but this wasn't even a legitimate dispute because at no point did he ever suggest anything that was even logically deducible from the rules.

Thank you all! I am going to email him this morning and let him have it.

The battle itself did not determine the outcome of the game. I just wanted to get back at player 1 for "cursing" me on the very first turn. And I wanted sweet revenge. I had pulled a cleric, a cleric only item (+3) and the foot mace (+3) with the opening hand. So Player one cursed me with a "lose your foot gear" and I had to discard my foot mace. I was a little peeved he picked on me on the first round.

I wanted sweet justice. Had he lost that battle...he would have lost all of his gear.

But a turn later, someone else won the game (the quesiton being...should I have saved the wandering monster + monster card to prevent the game winning turn...or use it to get revenge for the turn 1 curse? I was level 5 and wasn't going to win...so using the wandering monster card + Monster for revenge felt soo much better...that is...until player 1 got saved with dumb interference.)

Thanks All! I will spend today getting back into Munchkin Arguments!

LOL -- Oh well. I got away with cheating...but it's Munckin! It's not cheating unless you get caught! So I got caught. Big Whoop.

Anyway, their main rule is to argue the meaning of the rules. Half the fun is arguing about the rules.

My bad.

I think he greatly misunderstands the rules.

It is fun to play agianst him...cuz he's so good at interpreting the rules, and though 9 times out of 10, I lose to him, it is fun and exciting when I do actually win...fair and square. But luck usually needs to be on my side to win.

(After having read MunchkinMan's quote in the Funniest Muchkin Moments: But, now back to the serious part of tonight's program: Cheating is not really explicitly allowed in the letter of the rules, and I agree with Andrew that we need to excise anything that someone might be using to infer that it is. Period. End of story. IUD. No, wait, that's QED. Capisce? -- that our group constantly cheats and we have to point it out...and we have to be on our guards...like not discarding down to 5 (or 6 for dwarfs) and if someone holds 10 cards and someone points it out...the person who pointed it out gets curses thrown their way from the person who is FORCED to discard. That's the way we roll. We know we will try and cheat in our home games...so we make it a point to watch out. It's not like we're in a tourny or anything. We play a little cut throat and we go after each other for revenge (like my original purpose of the wandering monster was to skunk someone who had gotten me with a curse...rather than saving it for a prevention of someone getting to 10).

But we do follow the RULES when we are forced to follow the rules. And we argue the smallest point. Gets annoying sometimes having people bust each other up over the slightest thing, but in the end, it is fun. But really, only when you win!

Sounds to me you don't follow the rules. Sorry. If you cheat, you don't follow the rules.

By the way, you know that you only discard down to 5 if you are the lowest level, otherwise the person of lowest level gets those cards.
