I just don't feel that ablative DR should be that "expensive" compared to normal DR. Being able to lose your protection, if even for a second, seems like it should be more than a 5% limitation. After all, the GURPS combat system makes sure you can exploit such openings.

Cccwebs, I appreciate what your saying. And, in the specific case (my example is a power someone is trying to build) High-pain threshold, extra HP et. al. do not fit with the character (the character has fast regen). The player is not trying to munchkin, they want a renewing 30-pt force field (their field can stop an M-16, once).

Arguably, stupidly and munchkinly, someone could buy three sets of DR 10 ablative ff and extreme regeneration . . ..

As a GM, I'd price it out as DR 30, with a limitation giving a -5% price break.

So how did you end up going on this?
Did you just give the character a -10% discount on the price of DR?

I know sometimes if we just give a 5-10% limitation on something the players have a tendency to just scrounge for the points and buy it without any modifiers, but that's when settings/genre can come in and the GM can simply say that in a specific setting that's how that type of DR functions and therefore must be taken with that limitation.
Sort of likt the psi/mutant/magic limitations in certain settings.
