So are these companions going to be gear catalogs, or updates of the historical settings, or something else? I like the historical setting books, myself. At least, I like the one I've got so far.

Something else, mostly. There's going to be a some straight-up gear, but also a lot of descriptions of historical practices, ideas, and and institutions (frex, development of math and science, trade and transport, forms of government) with reference to how they might be represented in GURPS (what skills does one learn in a Medieval university, and when was Administration skill invented?) and "construction kit" rules for making and customizing things (weapons, alcohol, buildings). Lots of support for world-builders and players who want to do non-adventuring things (scholarship, practicing medicine, farming) from time to time.
