Default D&D conversion help needed

Hi all

How would you handle the D&D ability of a bonus to hit and damage when fighting certain types of creature? For examples, dwarves often have the racial ability "+1 to hit and damage versus orcs", which is based on their long history of fighting each other.

It could be a limited form combining Striking ST and DX (with limitations to combat and orcs), or a Talent (at least for the skill bonus to hit), or something else (maybe a bonus to Tactics skill)?

Thanks,

Ian

This is handled in GURPS Dungeon Fantasy, with the 'Mortal Foe' advantage - it's a form of Higher Purpose.

There is something like this in GURPS Dungeon Fantasy 3, a form of Higher Purpose that costs 5 points (but you have to have at least one combat skill at 20- or better).

I hope this helps.

It also notes specific exceptions, such as the Holy Warrior, who don't need to reach skill 20 to get Higher Purpose against some foes. If Dwarfs in your setting hate orcs that much, then feel free to allow them to have it.

Note that Higher Purpose gives +1 to all roles that aid it. So Higher Purpose (Slay Orcs) would give +1 to Fast Talk rolls to trick Orcs into a Trap. Also, if a large proportion of the Dwarf population have this Higher Purpose then the Dwarfs should be having regular 'crusades' to kill the Orc scum...

Thanks for the quick responses. I have all the DF books but couldn't see Mortal Foe although it was mentioned in passing on another thread. I'll look it up now!

Thanks again,

Ian

Another option is to perhaps allow dwarves to buy a technique that defaults to their weapon skill and caps at their weapon skill +1 that aids them against orcs.
