Default The DF Monster Thread

Old school dungeon delving modu er published adventures seemed to have space reserved for three things. New Monster. New Spell. And New Magic Items.

The latter two were problematic however: They usually ended up in the hands of the PCs and too often had exploitable loopholes the designer never saw, leading to games going bad.

New Monsters weren't that much of a problem however. If it was too weak it ended up on the wall of a PC or the PCs' favorite tavern. The PCs ended up on the wall of the monster if it was too powerful, but then the NEXT PCs wouldn't encounter another one of that type till they got more powerful.

So this thread is for folks to introduce DF style monsters for GMs to use.

Starting off:

Mauve Burrower

ST: 50 HP: 50 Speed: 7.5
DX: 12 Move: 7
IQ: 1 Will: 14 Per: 14
HT: 18 FP: 18 SM: 4+
Dodge: 7 (adjusted by SM) Parry: n/a DR: 8/4 vs impaling or pi - pi++

Attack (Skill or Resistance): Brawling 14

Traits: Tunneling 7. Stone Stabilizing*, Scanning Sense Vibrations

Skills: Mining (specialized shoring up tunnels) 14

Class: Giant

Notes: The Mauve Burrower is a purple red colored silverfish resembling insect of incredible size. It is essential for the well being of the typical dungeon environment. It's believed to have been created either by insane elder beings or the Gods. It consumes rock and earth leaving large tunnels and underground caverns in it's wake. A property of it's exoskeleton is to alter stone, any stone it makes contact with is considered worked. This alteration does two things. It reduces the friction the rock produces on the burrower (though it is not detectably smother) and it hardens it, making it less prone to collapse. They also innately understand the principles of shoring up the tunnels they create, stopping every so oftent to eat around solid rock into columns that support their roofs.

Most of the underground regions now occupied with monsters and loot started as Burrower tunneling. Slain burrowers have several valuable body parts. The shell can be ground down and alchemists can make a very strong mortar for binding construction stones. Other parts can be used to make Alkhest potions.
