When mankind first evoled, it began to worship spirits of nature. These spirits taught mankind survival and how to form societies. Mankind fought for its place in the world and hid in relatively remote areas. Fortunately, the society of the dinosaurmen was already already in decline and allowed mankind a place to grow. Still many a human was captured and enslaved by the dinosaurmen.
Mankind spread out to to new areas around the world. Some went to live in the deserts, others to the frozen north and everywhere in between. Mankind encountered new humanoids ike the ratmen, catmen, wildmen and others but they were usually small in number and typical remained hidden. Mankind grew in number and began builing societies, still relatively primitive however. The dinosaurmen saw this as a threat and began to invade areas of humans and the humans responded with war. THere were endless terrible battles with man often becoming enslaved or worse. Still man survived through sheer will. The spirits helped mankind and granted them access to the spirit realm. The spirits taught man magic and how to defend themselves from the dinosaurmen. Some of the spirits were gods, others their servants and even others were just spirits of nature. Man learned many stories of their worlds and these were the myths and legends of the spirit realm. Each mythology had a realm in the spirit world. The spirit realm was connected to the faery realm. When the faery realm was ripped open it also allowed creatures from mythic realms to enter the mundane world. The hydra of myth sent her children to the mundane realm, as did the chimera, the sphinx, cerberus and many ther unique monsters of myth. Any creature from the mythic age entered the mundane realm through the rips in the faery realm if they desired to. Even gods were said to have walked among men in the mundane realm, often instructing the people of how to serve them. In return for service, the gods taught mankind to defeat the dinosaurmen and the dark faeries that entered the mundane realm. Soon mankind was dominant and forced the elves, halflings, centaurs, sprites, nymphs, pixies, leprechauns, wildmen, and fauns into the forests, the dwarves and mountain elves into the mountains where they dug mines, and lizardmen into the swamps, catmen into the jungles, coleopterans undergound and the dark faeries and dinosaurmen to deep in the underworld. Man needed more and more space to expand. Man began to war against man, fighting was deadly and constant. Society slaughtered society. Mankind was filled with wickedness which allowed the infernal realm to enter the mundane realm. It started the night of the skull-moon. Demons of all sorts entered into the world, often masquerading as the gods of the spirit realm. The demons corrupted men into damning their souls through debauchery. The evil faeries regained their powers and began to plot revenge. The dead of man began to rise as vampires, zombies and spectres. Mankind had doomed itself through evil. Creation was being destroyed. The infernal realm became the dominant power in the mundane realm. This was known as the dark period. Men became as monstrous as the evil faeries and demons, they no longer listened to the spirits and gods from the spirit realm. There were some men who weren't wicked though, and the prayed to the spirit realm to stop all of the violence and wickedness. Some they made a covenant with celestial beings who promised to rid the world of wickedness as long as man stayed faithful. The celestial beings destroyed the cities and temples of the wicked and gave their worshippers the power to turn the demons, undead and evil faeries by using faith. Soon the faithful grew in number and began to form new societies that didn't tolerate wickedness. Demons, evil faeries, undead and other malevalent beings were driven away, often to the underworld. Creatures of myth were often driven away as well. The gods of the spirt world were sometimes condoned but often their worship was forbidden, they became false gods or early gods. It was now that the celestial beings world ruled the surface world. But the infernal realm ruled the underworld. Demons, undead, evil faeries, dragons and others wandered the endless caverns of the underworld. Often these creatures had treasures of ancient ages. |
