Whip will only cost a wizard 2 IQ slots, but Bola will cost the wizard 6 IQ (4 for Thrown Weapons and 2 for Bola). But that big bola downside comes with a couple extra pluses: the wiz can now throw his silver dagger more accurately and does not need to have the bola/dagger in hand since it can be drawn & thrown in the same turn. Thus not interfering with casting.

Both whip and bola weapons in ITL have a strong impact in combat, so the loss of spell slots are not missed.

But you could just as easily give those talents to a fighter, and then bring a wizard with a full or fuller complement of spells.

In days of old, Classic wizards were painfully limited in their talent pool even at very high levels of experience, while a Legacy wizard of ST 8, DX 14, IQ 18 could spend 8k XP to add +1 ST or they could instead go from no combat talents at all to instead buy:

• Knife talent, 1k XP
• Dagger Expertise, 3k XP
• Dagger Mastery, 3k XP
• and add 5 mana for the final 1k XP

So what talents does your wizard buy at start to avoid standing around in combat, and what is their "growth curve" of talents to buy later when these become relatively more affordable?
