Default Entrap Spirit

Spells P. 60 gives us, "Seals a spirit within a chamber of container for the duration. The prison can be of any size - from a bottle to a dungeon - but it must be fully, tightly closed, (waterproof is good enough), and you must touch it during casting."

I believe Zombies count as Spirits. Would the wizard need a portable cage of a sufficient size for the zombie to fit (perhaps watertight) to touch that would entrap the zombie in the cage?

I don't think a zombie counts as a spirit for the following reasons:
  • Zombies (Monsters, p. 62) are classed as Undead (not spirits).
  • Under Monster Classes (Monsters, p. 14), spirits are defined as "Intangible supernatural beings affected by Necromantic spirit-control spells and not otherwise classed as demons, divine servitors, elementals, or undead" (emphasis in the original).
  • The introduction to the Necromantic Spells college states that "Those [spells] that target spirits affect all intangible spirits – and those that interact with dead or undead bodies work on all formerly living beings – unless a race or monster’s description states otherwise" (Spells, p. 59). This provides further support that spirits are, by definition, intangible.

Zombies definitely aren't spirits. They are undead-class, not spirit-class.

Ghosts, Banshees, etc. from the traditional fantasy settings count as undead.

Do they not count as spirits?

If they are intangible undead, Entrap Spirit effects them.

The difference between the monster class "Spirit" and "Undead" is that "Spirit" is for things that you can't label as "demons, divine servitors, elementals, or undead." but still effected by "Necromantic spirit-control spells".

There is only 1 example of a monster classified as "Spirit" and that is the Guardian Spirit.

Could you trap whisky with Entrap Spirit? Is that how you get whisky into bottles?

It would work on all liquors except Absinthe. That's technically a little green fairy, different type of magic.

Reminds of a Swedish adventure module where a room contained the "liquor dragon" (which was depicted on posters used to scare people away from drinking in the 19th century). No stats were given.

That’s a cool idea for an animate object on a big still. Or maybe a Still golem?

So what if you wanted to entrap an evil spirit, a Banshee for example, into a container that would kill the spirit.

Like, a holy relic, or a vial of Holy Water? Or should this be a more specific magic item? If so, what do you think it would cost for a magic container that destroyed evil spirits trapped within them?
