I'd question whether the likely consequence of failing a gender role performance check would actually be people re-assessing their estimate of your sex as opposed to simply reacting negatively to you apparently being bad at your gender.

Failure results are a whole other kettle of monkeys. I'd almost be tempted to come up with a table of random consequences.

That would depend on whether it was a failed Disguise check or Acting check, whether the character had any sort of androgynous appearance or perk, or the opposite, how out of the normal range of height and build for the sex they're trying to pass as they are, and so on.

Also, there's the matter of who you failed against. Someone from a culture where this sort of thing would be considered ridiculous is probably just going to write it off as a lack of manner or bad upbringing. A culture where there's a strong awareness of cross-dressing and people trying to pass might consider that first instead.

"It depends"

*finds "Unwelcome Accessory" on pg 13 of PU6: Quirks*
"you cannot control or (easily) remove"
"occasionally interferes with your actions"
"shouldn’t be potentially lethal"
"article that enemies could use against you"

It's weird how normal maleness can't qualify for that as being built-in

"embarassingly large sex toy that you cannot conceal" is actually present as an example too.

I think there's negligible difference between a literal toy an the real thing if all we're talking about is a distracting "tent" silhouette

I think it's certainly unwanted in times of wanting to masquerade as a female.

re the "ignore your Appearance bonus and react at -1" situation

how would this work for the "very handsome" woman in the example (+6 to androphiles / +2 to gynephiles) would she be at -1, or +2-1=+1?

Also wondering, with the bonus EMS gets to Fast Talk / Acting / Disguise to convince someone they're the one they resemble...

What sort of roll would they make to convince someone they're the ACTUAL one?

Or non-EMS for that matter trying to convince of who they really are vs what they aren't?

Should this mean that Cross-Dressing as a Technique for Disguise ought to be Hard (2 points to buy off the -1) ? Otherwise it would just be cheaper to put 1 point in the tech instead of buying the Androgynous perk to improve your skill.

However whatever subtle thing it is, it's a different type of thing based on gender shapes I think? Otherwise it's hard to explain different bonuses on some targets.

Symmetry seems like some "overall attractiveness" type thing, like maybe represented by the 1st +1 which isn't different amounts for different orientations.

Maybe even up to the non-statted "double attractive" which would be +2 to everyone.

Past then, there's got to be more than symmetry I would figure since it stays at +2 for one group and goes beyond for the other.

Well, Heck... I suppose that I now have the Word Of Kromm on the issue. All is noted, and I will provide an appropriate cite in my manuscript. :)
