Default Critical combat

If you crit while attacking, that means the opponent doesn’t get a defence roll, but isn’t there (at least) two issues with this, namely the opponent’s lack of chance to critically fail and that should it really be equally applied whether your and your opponent’s skill level is 10 or 20?

Shouldn’t the opponent at least roll a roll where success is ignored but critical failures are not. Potentially even that critical successes is the new baseline for margin of success and/or that each result gets “bumped down a notch” (so failure becomes critical failure, critical success becomes success, etc).

So, in essence, it gives the opponent -10 at their defence, which is GURPS for basically impossible tasks. I get that it’s an “extra roll”, but yet it’s rather the opposite – a roll not ignored.

Anyone else have a take on this?
