Default GURPS Dungeon Fantasy Setting: Cold Shard Mountains

A land of demons
Of monsters and stony death
The Cold Shard Mountains
— A broken Crusader
Willing to adapt a setting from GURPS Dungeon Fantasy – one a little larger than GURPS Dungeon Fantasy Setting: Caverntown? Perhaps one big enough to qualify as a "world," at least as far as delvers are concerned? Then look no further, for you've stumbled upon it!

GURPS Dungeon Fantasy Setting: Cold Shard Mountains offers a rough mountainous region, shot through with tunnels – and of course, dungeons – for your heroes to explore. It has a long history, one that has left behind artifacts for brave delvers to seek out and fell monsters for them to slay (or avoid, if that's how they roll). All the details you need to turn it into a series of adventures or even an entire campaign are here – including maps, glorious maps! As a bonus, there are also guidelines on megadungeons and hex crawls, both being perfect fits to the setting.

More than that would require a spoiler alert, so pick up a copy and see for yourself!

This is very exciting. I just flipped through it once and it looks great. I might have to wait until after my grading deadline to read it more carefully. (Or maybe it will be my dessert after each evening of hard work...)

I'm about to start running a Nordlond campaign. I wonder how this might fit in there?

Much of the area of the notional Nordlond map is not published yet, though there are some maps of the broader world in Dragon Heresy. I'd need to look more closely about the types of critters and dangers found in CSM, but I CAN tell you that there are three or four sequential mountain ranges to the west of the Vesturham range that demarcates the western border of Nordlond. Sticking the mountains there would work entirely well.

As written, the Cold Shard Mountains are nominally part of the "Wellsprings of Creation" setting in the Pyramid Dungeon Collection, and there are vaguely defined spots in the north where Nordland could fit in that world. However, those links are very loosely defined and entirely optional (basically, there's a spot on the Wellsprings map where the CSM fit and some things mentioned in passing in the Wellsprings article are fleshed out in CSM), so you could just as easily drop the CSM onto the Nordlands map as the other way around. It's GURPS, so it's all modular.

Not in the budget right now for me to get it, but after reading the preview I must say that this looks very well written and like a truly fun DF setting!

it just became in the budget for me.

while DF is definitely modular and anything can fit anything if you smooth out the edges a bit, it's fun to have suggestions from both authors on specific 'fitting' areas that this can share.

thanks for making this one!

Can you please be more specific on these? I have all the Nordlands materials but don't want to run a Viking flavor Nordland campaign, but it would be fine as part of a larger setting.

I don't yet have Cold Shard Mountain but will probably buy the PDF if it is part of Well Spring of Creation (WSC) setting.

BTW, has anyone done a nice full color hex map of the the WSC?

This setting looks great! Quick question the preview lists the DF 1st ed rule books (I.e DF book 2 Dungeons) that are helpful for the setting. I have the 2nd ed rules (DF RPG). Just curious as to which extra books I should pickup.

With the DFRPG, you have all the rules you need!

If you’re just looking for more, I’d go for DF16: Wilderness Adventures. That’ll play up the camping-sunburn-quicksand aspects of roaming the mountains and long-term delves underneath. Oooooooor, pick up Gaming Ballistic’s Hall of Judgement, ‘The Journey’ on pages 19-29 covers the traveling aspect that’s applicable to “DF Outdoors” and will be useful to add-on to the setting (as well as being a good adventure on its own).
