The materials for mapping and laying out labyrinths have been evolving over the last year or two, and with the appearance of DoD I think a better paradigm has appeared ... but I'm not aware of any paper that is suitable for mapping in this new way!
Now that I have the Labyrinth Hexes in my hands, I am surprised (but pleased) to learn that they are actually presented at a very fine combat hex scale with megahex overlays, rather than at the 'canonical' labyrinth scale of 1 MH per map hex. If you have ever drafted a labyrinth at the nominal labyrinth scale you will realize that this is better because it is very difficult to represent narrow passages and small features at 1 MH per hex - it works seamlessly with some orientations of narrow and small features but not others, largely because megahexes don't actually tesselate in exactly the same way that a similar-sized hex does. You can fake it, but it isn't ideal because in the end your paper map doesn't exactly represent what you mean. Anyway, the Labyrinth Hex system does this better and I intend to shift my 1MH per hex maps to this format. BUT, I'm not aware of any supply of hex paper that is suitable. There is some hex paper with MH overlays provided with the Legacy Edition, but it is much too coarse scaled for a labyrinth base (it is really only appropriate for its intended purpose of making little local maps of sections of labyrinths). Anyone have an angle on appropriate mapping paper with a hex scale of ~1 per 1/8" or so and a MH overlay? |
