It looks like 3 is winning, but I'm not calling the vote yet. At some point in the next day or two, provided Real Life doesn't get in the way (I live in Florida, we're expecting weather), I'll call the vote, and if things haven't changed, put up a new vote that will probably be based on 3 (something related to Tholian castes, I think).

Tholians question IV
What castes should the Tholians have? This isn't a numbered question, just list the castes, along with hopefully a description of each. A followup question may be needed, but that's for later.

Leaders - those who are destined to be in charge of all or part of a hive. Ambassadors also come from this caste
Lieutenants - those who will be in charge of small groups (less than 2 dozen) Learners - those who will be schooled in a science - medics also come from this caste Lifters - these are the individuals who are charged with fixing or repairing things. Laborers - those who do unskilled labor. Their number has decreased with technological advances, but there is still need for them

Queens - the leaders of the hives, along with those intended to become heads of splinter hives (such as ship hives)
Scribes - the scientists and record-keepers of the hives Warriors - as it says on the tin Workers - includes technicians as well as menial laborers Messengers - those meant to travel between hives relaying orders and intent from the ruling hive; also used to communicate with non-Tholians Clerics - the religious caste among Tholians, often advisors to the Queens and Messengers Medics are few and far between, as Tholian religious teachings are to destroy those too injured to continue, returning them to the sacred rocks. However, they do exist to care for those suffering only minor wounds.

They should have castes better suited for a low-tech environment, clumsily adapted to the ultra-tech environment:
Soldiers Hunters (militaristic, but more scouts/skirmishers) Laborers (big and strong) Artisans Caretakers (for the young and the sick. could end up in many service rolls) Queens/Reproductive a hive's personality is effected by the balance, and any tholian can conceivably be used for any job.

I second ericthered's caste system. While societies may be able to adapt over time, physical evolution is usually a slower process.

Unless they have access to genetic engineering. We know that humans had it in the 20th-21st century (the eugenics war), so Tholians may well have it too.

Should I do a question about whether the Tholians genetically engineered new castes, before I start working on an answer post for question IV, or should I go straight to the answer post?

Well, one theme of star trek seems to be that genetic engineering rarely turns out well, but that may just be limited to humans... or at least humanoids.

I don't know what genetic engineering has to do with Tholians, they're crystalline.
