Using WIzards Charm after the thief

Munchkin Blow-out over the charm spell.

I had decided I was going to fight the monster, then my mate used his thief backstab ability to give me -2. I then decided I was going to charm it.

My mate said that because I had already chosen to fight it I could not then charm it as I had to choose one or the other at the start of the combat.

Am I going mad, or is it totally fine for me to charm the monster?
