Wishing ring question.

So during a game, a player was fighting a monster which it’s bad stuff stated the player to the left would receive a treasure card if he failed to run away. Before attempting to run away, he stated that he wanted to play his wishing ring. I asked him on what, to which he stated there is no curse, so I played it and it does nothing in an attempt to discard the card so that the player to the left would not be able to get it from the main player suffering the monsters bad stuff. Is this allowed?
