Question about floating nose

If player A is fighting the floating nose and player B uses the potion of halitosis, not to add damage, but to kill it, does the player A kill it and go up a level or does the floating nose just die? Or does technically player B kill it and go up a level?

My friends and I have all been arguing over this so an answer is much appreciated.
