Salutations!
In most settings, you'd just buy one (I think), but I couldn't find horses in any equipment list I checked. Are they supposed to be purchased as an Ally? I realize horses need training before they can be used as a mount, but IMO that should only affect the cost in (starting) money. |

Horses have enough stats that they're not just equipment. See "Animals and Monsters", pages 455-461 of the Basic Set. Horse stats and prices are on pages 458-60. Buying them as Allies is possible, but very much optional.

Well, I'll be...
I had looked at the stats, but somehow I completely overlooked the listed price. D'oh! Forests, trees and all that. Thank you! |

At TL5 and below, a horse or similar mount could also be part of what you get with your Status (provided it's Status 0 or better; Status -1 may have a donkey or mule, but it's not guaranteed). Daily feed would then be part of your Cost of Living.
Of course, if you're "nickel-and-dime"-ing your inventory list due to being a DF-esque murder-hobo, that's another story which since I don't use a murder-hobo economy in my fantasy games I can't comment on.

You don't have to pay for Ally for equipment, vehicles or your retinue; you can simply use money. You pay for Ally when you want a one or more of: plot armour, superior quality assistance, guaranteed loyalty, summonable etc. etc.
A horse you buy is just a horse. A 150 point IQ 6 horse that understands two dozen commands, will fight for you and fetch help if need be ('What's that Dobbin? Balthazar has fallen down the well?') is probably an Ally. Last edited by mr beer; 10-29-2017 at 10:12 PM. |
