Baron Munchkinhausen

If another player plays Baron Munchkinhausen during my combat, do they steal the level I would get for defeating the monster I'm fighting? A friend thinks so because of the first paragraph of the Baron card where it says he takes credit for the victory.

If it meant that, it would say so unambiguously.
