It's funny how many misconceptions there are about nuclear power plants, from people convinced that the water vapor is actually "radioactive smoke" to the ones who think that each plant is one wrong key-press away from detonating like a nuclear bomb. (Personally, I blame B-movies and comic books.) But it's undeniable that mistakes do happen, with terrible potential consequences, and GURPS Disasters: Meltdown and Fallout is here to bring this terrifying scenario into your game.

Learn how nuclear power and waste disposal actually works, including the many safety measures in place . . . and then see what can go wrong when those safeties fail. Can your workers survive the steam explosion and escape the lava-like corium flow? Or are you transporting a waste cask when terrorists ambush your convoy to steal that spent fuel? Perhaps you're experts coming in after the meltdown, to contain the fallout particulates that have spread throughout the countryside -- or just normal civilians trying to survive the chaos! Whether you're trying to escape, save others, contain the breach, or cause it via sabotage, this supplement has the rules and advice that you need.

To help with this goal, GURPS Disasters: Meltdown and Fallout also expands the existing GURPS rules for radiation: Add additional detail with separate tracks for Current Radiation Load and Lifetime Dose; new rules for nonhumans (or altered humans) exposed to radiation; and a comprehensive list of radiation types, materials that provide a PF, and how the two interact. Or take a different approach and simplify all of this with Radiation Points -- or have things get weird as radiation interacts with magic. As if all that isn't enough, this work also expands on the rules for nuclear weapons from GURPS High-Tech and adds dozens of new pieces of radiation-focused gear!

Nuclear power may be relatively safe and reliable, but from a roleplaying perspective, the real fun happens when it isn't. So grab your spectrometers and prepare to fight the one "invisible enemy" that actually exists!

Of course, I'll still probably have to scream "radiation does not work like that!" at people who don't have this book. ;)

I feel like this is exactly the kind of product that would cause a naïve employee of the FBI to organise a raid upon a games company, on the erroneous grounds that they are distributing some kind of handbook for nefarious activity.

Luckily that would never happen in the real world.

Roger actually did give some love to cinematic/imaginary/weird "radiation" in this, as a potential source for everything from superheroes to classic post-apoc mutants. That isn't the focus, mind you -- the majority of this book by far is based on realistic, well-researched facts -- but I liked getting those brief nods to the impossible and imaginary. :)

So are the radiation rules in this compatible with those in AtE, or are they on opposite ends of the realism-cinematic spectrum?
