The English were the only one of the Great Powers who had a fully professional army. Their men, their equipment and their training was superior to all the other nations'. Unfortunately, there were about 100,000 of them and 4 million Germans...

It could also be noted that the British system of the time was the best attempt at duplicating the German system without resorting to conscription, which the British proudly ignored RN press gangs in order to pretend they had never done in the history of the Empire.
