Ruling needed on "help me out here"

Here is our scenario. 4 players playing munchkin deluxe. Player 1 is fighting a monster. Asks player 2 for help. Player 3 is enhancing the monsters. Players 1 & 2 keep using one shots to even up the fight to the point where they have the monster beat. Player 3 the attempts to use "help me out here" card to take an item from player 1 who is in combat arguing that they (player 3) can do that since they are considered to be "in combat" as well since they have been modifying the monsters and therefore have a stake in the battle. What is the general consensus. Can you use the "help me out here " against someone in combat if you are involve in combat only as a monster modifier.
