Default How does a world-jumper get started?

IIRC, a world-jumper has to be familiar with a destination world to get there.
So how does he get that familiarity before he gets there?

Nope there is another way. The Jumper can fumble. That will take it to a new world. It can also be taken there by another Jumper, or through other D-travel means.

Random jumping. In other words, automatic failure on the first use, so you get a random world.

There are also enhancements (New Worlds and Tracking) that will let you go somewhere new without another jumper to take you.

Or you might acquire the necessary skill through something other than going yourself - a Borrow Skill spell or the Wild Talent advantage would probably work RAW, and it's a very much setting defined ability, so there could be lots of other options depending on what was in the setting.

Depends in the setting.

For instance World Jumper in the Amberverse explicitly do not have that limitation. Otherwise it would be as mentioned: Random World from failure or having been taken there.

It's also possible that using some sort of psionics or advanced tech one could be given knowledge and familiarity of destination.

Not really. If you are using Amberites, then you get the New Worlds enhancement as part of the standard package.

If you want to encourage research and lore-seeking, a setting might also permit a world to be learned through study rather than direct experience, perhaps with a familiarity penalty.

The Voynich Manuscript might be an instruction manual for one destination world. Or manuals might be disguised with a different ostensible purpose -- there's a reason Tolkien spent so many pages on languages, poetry, geography, peoples you never meet...

What part of "using Amberites" isn't setting dependent?

It's not a setting switch. It's an actual game mechanic they pay for when you are designing them.

I didn't say 'switch', I said dependent. You're not going to build Amberites if you aren't running Amber.
