Mountains of Madness and Wishing Ring

Hi everyone. Our group seems to have a disagreement on how wishing rings (and other madness cancelling cards) work with a madness card that has been placed in the middle due to the Mountains of Madness portal card. Can a wishing ring (or related card) discard madness cards that have been placed in the middle? Or does it only apply when it's a madness card that only an individual player has?
