Note that that initial design didn't improve the immune system - it tried to do so, and as a result made everything but the immune system worse (the character has the same resistance to disease as he would without the modification). This is probably a case of making the immune system more aggressive at the expense of specificity, probably resulting in some sort of auto-immune disorder. The better designs likely don't trade in specificity (indeed, I'd imagine they improve it) when boosting the immune system.
