Hireling confusion

Hello!

Well, i am a little confused about the hirelings that comes with the base set, theres one that comes on the door side and apparenty it is a "special" item that will stay until discarded or removed by other conditions. There are other hirelings in the treasure cards that shows class at the bottom.

For what i understand the fist one would work like an item and the others will be treathen as a class for players. Is this correct?
