Kill the hireling without going up a level
Me and my brother were both level 9, and I had a hireling. I got a monster (don't remember which one it was) that I couldn't defeat without the hireling and the item placed on the hireling. My brother had a kill the hireling card and wanted to use it to make me lose the battle, he didn't have any other way to stop me. Are you allowed to kill the hireling even if you don't go up a level?

No. You can't use a GUAL card, even only for its secondary effect, if you can't receive the level.

If there was any other player in the game who wasn't Level 9, he could play the card on them, and they could choose to kill your Hireling, though.
