If one is cursed to be dead and one cannot begin to attempt to run away, where and the curse cannot be cancelled, may one discard a hireling in order to survive, or may the hireling be discarded to make running away automatic, but not avoid death?

I'm a bit unsure of what you're asking. You can't use a Hireling to escape a Curse, however.

Can you only discard a hireling to automatically succeed in running away, or, if the bad stuff consequence is death, can the hireling take the death and not the player, or in fact not?

Ah, okay. No. If you've rolled and failed to Run Away, it's too late to try to use your Hireling to escape. You must suffer the Bad Stuff. However, if the Bad Stuff wasn't death, and you had other Monsters to Run Away from, you could choose to use your Hireling.
