Default Is it possible to retrieve cards from in-play to your hand?

Hello All,

This is my first time posting on the forums, so I apologize if this has been covered in previous threads. My friends and I have been playing muchkins for the last couple months and absolutely love the game. However in one of our recent games 2 things happened that really got under my skin and I want to know what the rules say about it.

Are you allowed to switch cards between your "hand" and "carried" freely on your turn when out of combat?

Here's the situation - I was playing as a wizard class and someone had used the mate card on a monster that I could have beaten. I wanted to discard my whole hand to make the new "mate" disappear so I could continue to beat the original - However I only had 2 cards in my hand, but i had several items being carried.. obviously I lost that battle and had to run away. At the start of my next turn I wanted to move some of my carried items into my hand so that situation wouldn't happy again. Am I allowed to switch those cards freely at the start of my turn or not?
