Do golems naturally stop working in no-mana areas? They are magical constructs, powered by magic, an active spell... whatever words you like to use. Or are they candidates for No-Mana Shutdown or Mana Dependency? Is there a definitive rule or cluster of rules that would seem to govern best or advise for illumination best?
Thanks |

One of the many many problems with GURPS Magic. Golems are enchantments, and per the rules for enchantments, the enchantment is suspended in a no mana zone, which should result in no mana shutdown. This is an inconsistency.

I didn't say it was a)any good or b) made any kind of sense only that it exists (the OP wanted rules references). Yes, they probably should have No Mana Shutdown. I suppose you could submit that as errata.

Since the clay golem is already a 0 point character, it wouldn't make much difference to its value as an Ally. And of course it might not be a campaign that has no-mana areas.

But then another player pointed out, and I think he's correct, those books (DF2, Magic) were published before the Disads of No-Mana Shutdown or Mana Dependency were published or invented. So I wonder if since golems are "made" of magic, are an enchantment, are a spell effect, are a magic item, etc... if they ought to stop working. Opinions are welcome. Oh, and thanks for the responders that posted while I took a long time to write this part. It should be noted that this is therefore sort out of sequence with some of the thread. |

Since golems are enchantments and golems can not pass a Pentagram spell does that mean that magic items in general can not pass a Pentagram spell as magic items are enchantments?

Yes, thank you, I did want rules references. And personally I think their original write up already assumed they had No-Mana Shutdown because they are made of magic and enchantment. I think they should fall down in a No-Mana area AND that they are not suddenly deserving of a 20 point Disad because a later book/rule invented situations where non-spell animated beings could be toast without magic.
