In low tech, why does a wheelbarrow beat the snot out of a wagon?
An 18 lb. wheelbarrow can carry 350 lbs. but a 680 lb. wagon can only carry 1000 lbs? Those load to weight ratios are wacked. Everything I have read states outright that a medieval wagon could carry 5 to 10 times its own weight, regardless of scaling. This 7,800 pound wagon (oak with iron tires) carried 73,200 pounds of borax ore and was pulled by 20 mules. Yes, this was a more recent vehicle, but it was build using the same principles. I am using a base ratio of 5:1 for wagon loads, regardless of size. And using Quality construction materials ups this to 7.5:1 While Cheap construction lowers this to 2:1 |
