Curses that don't affect you

Hi, one more query.

Do i penalised by the curse drawn face up from the Door Deck, if i don't have the specific item armed? Does the curse stay until a player gets that item?

For eg, Income Tax curse, Lose 1 small item etc, where no items are in play or in hand.
