Mayonaise spit kill

Hey All,

We were playing munchkin Axe cop and a friend of mine was trying to win, he was fighting a level 1 monster and he was level 9. I then played the Mayonaise spit to kill the monster. He didn't kill it. But should he get the level or not?
Or shouldn't I be allowed to play the mayonaise spit?

Ruling required.

He would get the level and win the game. The level for killing a monster always goes to the combat owner unless a card very specifically says otherwise.
