Default Question about Munchkin Polo Shirt

We need an official munchkin forum opinion!!!!

I have the Munchkin Polo Shirt, and would like to use it as a steed towards the beginning of the game. However we have a few questions:

1) If I would like to use another steed at some point in the game, can I simply take off the Munchkin Polo Shirt to equip the new steed?
2) What happens if I take it off, is the steed immediately dead/discarded?
3) Am I allowed to take it off at any time?
4) At what point must I declare the shirt as a steed?
4a) At the beginning of the game or at any point during my turn (outside of combat)?

Thanks in advanced for your help!!!!!!!!!!!

I would say you can take the shirt off at any point, but that steed is now gone. You can also announce it as a steed at any point during your turn. Hope that helps.

But steed rules do not allow you to discard a steed any time. If the shirt is a steed, then this contradicts the steed rules.

Note that it says you may treat your Polo shirt as a Steed. This wording implies you can also stop treating it as a Steed too. It's not certain, but that would solve most of these problems quite easily.

I agree with this notion. The word "may" really does imply that you could choose to make it a steed outside of any combat. I would say that once you stop treating it as a steed, it can not be a steed again.

Sorry jgabdoo, you must not have played steed rules that much... There are no specific steed rules that say you can't discard a steed. In fact, the steed rules go on to say:

If your Steed gives you a penalty to Run Away, you may discard the Steed before you roll to flee. You don’t suffer the penalty, but the card goes to the discard pile.

This is a specific example, but I would say that this rule allows any steed to be discarded whether it is selling it like a big item or losing it for any other reason. Just like all items, you may sell them at any time, even for zero gold.

I have to agree with JT, there are no rules that say you can't discard it. I also agree with Clipper. We play with this expansion all the time, and I have a friend that owns the shirt. We always play that you can make it a steed whenever you'd like, and you can also make it not a steed at anytime since it says you "may" make it a steed.

I don't think jgabdoo is saying you can never discard a Steed, just that you can't discard one at any time.

JTMagic said you can take the shirt off "at any point." I think jgabdoo is saying you'd have to follow normal Steed rules and only take it off if its giving you a penalty to run away. Which it isn't. However, you could include it with No Value in a sale for a level.

I can get on board with that. You can discard a steed during your turn to go up a level. I still agree with Clipper that since it says you "may" treat it is a steed, then you "may" also treat it as not a steed without selling it.

Do the shirt rules actually specify that it is an item with No Value? Because I seem to recall a ruling that made it clear that Steeds follow the rules for Items only if they actually ARE items. I'll see if I can find it. As I recall it involved treating a tamed monster as if it were an Item simply because it is now considered a Steed, and the ruling was that you couldn't do that, that being a Steed didn't automatically make something an item.

If I'm remembering correctly, that should mean that the shirt could only be DISCARDED if it was giving a penalty to Run Away, and could not be sold, or otherwise treated like an Item (i.e. stolen by a thief).

EDIT:

Here it is:

That would seem to exclude the shirt from being treated as an Item unless the rules for it specify a GP Value.

Thanks for all of the responses so far!!! The real reason I'm asking is for this sequence of events:
1) I equip my polo shirt as a steed,
2) I then draw another steed with a higher bonus,
3) I then want to get rid of my polo shirt steed to play the steed with the higher bonus

I was really trying to get clarity on whether the word "may" in the rules for the shirt implies that I can make it and un-make it a steed at any time that it is legal to do so. Since this is only likely to happen once, I'd doubt I'd ever want to re-equip my shirt steed, and I'd be OK if the rule meant you can only make the shirt a steed once per game (but the rules for the shirt do not say or imply this).

It sounds like the least controversial thing to do would be to "sell" it for no value (since there is no value for the shirt) to go up a level with the sale of other items, but it'd be a lot easier just to make my polo steed not a steed anymore!
