So my friends and I recently adopted the Listen Step since tournies use the Fast Play rules, and because my deck is hooj and we need the Fast Plays to make things move at a reasonable pace.
The only problem is we're trying to figure out exactly how it works. We get that you can play stuff between Listen and Kick, but can a MONSTER you just drew from Listening be played at that point, in order to fight them? Or can Monsters only be played from your hand when you Look For Trouble, after Kicking Open the Door?

That one, yes :) Note, of course, that you may only Look for Trouble if you Kicked Open the Door and got something other than a monster. |

Okay, so we were playing it right.
We questioned this just because, while most of us (including me) have been playing for several years, now, we never used Listen, and the Fast Play blurb in the rules don't go into very great detail about it at all (nor do the tournament rules, for that matter).

The understanding in my group is that when the turn passes to you:
First you can play curses and other non-item cards, play items from your hand to the table, re-arrange and change 'equipped' items, peruse other player's layouts, and propose/conduct trades until you feel hungry for a new card to chortle about. Then you announce "I Listen at the Door" and obtain a face-down door card which goes straight to your hand (our group maintains a fixed dealer, but not all will). Then you can again equip, play to the table, trade, etc. and when you're feeling buff, you announce "I break (bust/kick/hack/shove/whatever) the door down" and the top door draw deck card is turned over in front of you. If a curse/trap/madness/room/I may have forgotten a type or two here/portal comes up, resolve it immediately. If a monster comes up, resolve it immediately, usually by combat, but always read the full text of the monster, and apply as directed. Otherwise, this card, too, goes into your hand (as did the one from listening, the main difference being other players know what this one is). Then, if no monster was dealt with, either Look for Trouble -or- Loot the Room. See Clipper's Unofficial, but helpful anyway, flowchart. Sorry for the long complex answer, and please try to believe me, I held back a lot of even more extraneous material. |

If you are using the Listening rule, it is the very first thing you do on your turn (unless you have a card that says it must be the first thing you do, such as Meals On Wheels from Zombies). Your turn begins when you draw your Listening card, and *then* you can make any changes you want to make.

Oh.
We've (mostly I've) possibly been doing it wrong. At the least, I had it wrong in my head when I typed too much up above. Noted for future reference. |
